Long-time readers may remember that I am somewhat obsessed with the idea of learning to surf. I’ve taken lessons a few times, and while I’ve been able to stand up on the board every time, I don’t think I’ll be joining the pro tour anytime soon. Still, practice makes perfect, so when my parents planned a vacation to Newport Coast, Calif., and invited me along, I immediately decided to set up a surf lesson.
My brother joined me, and as I predicted, he was standing and surfing within about five minutes, despite the fact that he had never tried before. Can you guess who is the natural athelete?
I had more trouble, partly because of my janky knee (and the fact that my “pop up” is more like an old lady who has fallen and can’t get up), but was able to catch several waves and eventually stand up multiple times… though my dad (who took most of these photos) did not catch it on camera, so you’ll just have to believe me.
The water was a bit rough, and since it is California and not Hawaii, we had to wear wetsuits. But our instructor, Shelby, was very helpful in getting us out to catch waves and also telling us what we needed to do.
We had a great time, and I thought it was a pretty good workout (my brother, who is doing an Ironman this fall and can run more than twice as fast as me, considered it more like a “rest day). But really, it’s hard not to enjoy time spent playing in the ocean — cold water or not. If you’re in the Newport Beach area, you should definitely check out Endless Sun Surf School… and ask for Shelby!
After our surfing adventure, we figured we should get a proper California surfer treat: pitaya and acai bowls. I had seen photos of delicious creations from Banzai Bowls on Facebook, so when I saw there was one within walking distance of the pier, we had to try it. They were absolutely delicious, of course. I guess it probably would have been even more appropriate to get California burritos, but I think you need a surfer’s metabolism to eat a burrito full of carne asada and french fries for breakfast!
Have any of you had luck learning to surf?
