Bows and dots at Disneyland

Today, I want to talk about belts and mouse ears.

Toby and I had been planning to go to Disneyland for Valentine’s Day, but a bunch of work things came up, and we weren’t able to go. Work (his and mine) kept getting in the way every weekend since, but we finally made it to see “Cinderella” (which we both enjoyed) and to the happiest place on Earth.

I usually wear Disney-themed clothes to Disneyland, but this time I decided to channel my inner Minnie and wear polka dots and bows. I have a pale pink sequined pair of mouse ears on a headband that really bugs me when I wear it (the sequins rub on the back of my ears), and a black and hot pink “pirate princess” pair, but I wanted to get a more traditional pair, maybe something like the ones I had in the early 80s:

I was also hoping I could get the hat kind because it would cover my roots (I had to push my hair appointment back several times, again because of work). But it turns out Disneyland doesn’t have the old-school kind with a bow — the Minnie pair have her signature on the front. I do like the headband kind I ended up with, though. I also decided that Minnie and Mickey are Georgia fans, hence the red and black.

Now, on the topic of belts:  If you’ve ever read any fashion magazine, blog or article involving tips to dress your body (or watched a show like “What Not to Wear”), you’ve probably heard that women, particularly those with “curves,” should basically wear a belt at all times. As a lifelong belt-avoider, I was troubled by this advice, but a few years ago, I decided to give it a go. I bought a couple of belts and tried wearing them with various outfits… and I’ll admit that some dresses (mainly of the fit and flare variety) do look cuter with a belt.

However, I’ve also realized that as a short-waisted apple-shaped lady, belts do not really do a lot for me. I think the issue is that when people talk about “curvy” women, they are generally referring to hourglass figures. But I don’t have a defined waist, and all of my junk is in my trunk — I don’t have any junk sidecars.

Still, a red patent-leather bow belt is perfect for Disneyland, regardless of your body shape. Maybe it’s the fairy dust?
