I’ve been wanting to go to a surf competition since we’ve moved to Southern California, but something always seemed to come up. Last summer, we were about 30 minutes too late to see any surfing at the Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, so I was determined to make it this year. And we did! We managed to catch some surfing on Saturday and Sunday, and to see the finals!
The waves were pretty small, but it was still really awesome to watch.
We were able to sit on the beach right next to the pier, though the view was still a little iffy because tons of people felt the need to just stand at the edge of the water the whole time, blocking everyone else’s view. A few dumb guys were also trying to boogie board in the competition area.
We were able to see some of the surfing, though, and to see the surfers warming up and coming out of the water. It was really cute how tons of little girls in pink Supergirl capes would run into the water to get photos and autographs with the surfers at the end of each round.
I took all these photos on Saturday, when it was pretty overcast. The finals on Sunday were bright and sunny.
We thought Tatiana Weston-Webb (with the blue hat) was going to win, but Sage Erickson managed to come back at the end and take home her second Supergirl cape.
I wasn’t sure what to wear, so I went with a dress (actually a top/tunic that I wear as a dress) that can double as a cover-up, along with some crazy colorful sandals, jewelry and the new pink and silver beachy bag Toby bought me in Hawaii as a birthday gift.
Since watching the surfing involves sitting on a towel or beach chair on the sand, it is definitely a lot more comfortable if you’re wearing shorts or a bathing suit + coverup. And, of course, it’s important to wear something you don’t mind getting covered in sand. #californiaproblems
