Finding the perfect fit

Guys, stop reading now. It’s about to get super girly up in here, and you don’t want to hear about it. Trust me.

Ladies… we’re going to talk about bras.

I’m sure you’ve read the statistics. Something like 300 percent women are wearing the wrong size bra. Whatever. But, even if you’ve been measured, you may not have had a lot of luck. I’ve definitely been measured and then immediately tried on that size, only to have it not fit. Or I’ve had to try on and buy several different sizes all on the same day. And that makes sense: Different styles are made differently, and people are made differently. Plus women’s sizes in all clothing is super weird. That’s why the ladies at Intimacy don’t use measuring tapes.

So… what do they do? Well, they have you put on a robe, then they check out what you’ve got going on, they bring some bras for you to try, and they put them on you. They also explain how a bra is supposed to fit: Tight and low around your back, with the band doing most of the supporting. The straps should also be pretty tight, but they shouldn’t be having to do much work. So, if your band is riding high on your back, it’s too big. And if your straps are sliding off your shoulders or digging into your skin, you should readjust. And, obviously the cups should fit so there isn’t a lot of extra room or wrinkling, but they also aren’t digging in anywhere or creating the dreaded four-boob affect.

The salesgirl who helped me, Renee, was super nice and brought a TON of bras for me to try on. She didn’t tell me what size they were (which is probably for the best, because it was a little alarming when I looked at what size some of them actually were), but helped make sure they were fitting properly and told me about all of their features. Since the bras at Intimacy are pretty expensive, I couldn’t buy all of them, but I did still bring home a few, plus a sports bra.

I actually went to the store originally because my friend Isabel wasn’t sure what size she needed and had struck out at two other stores (they measured her differently at each store, plus some of them didn’t carry the sizes in store that they had online). One of the great things about Intimacy is that they carry a very wide range of sizes, so you should be able to at least try one or two on in your size. If you do have one near you, email me at marshmallowsandmargaritas (at) gmail (dot) com and I will send you a coupon code (I will get a coupon, too).

If not, you may try department stores (I know Nordstrom has a ton of sizes, as well as free shipping and returns inside the U.S.) or specialty lingerie stores in your area. And all is not lost if you have to resort to a measuring tape! Just make sure you worry more about the fit than the size! Everyone needs a good support system, after all. 🙂

(Note: This is not a sponsored post, and I was not compensated in any way by Intimacy, though I would certainly love some free bras if they want to send me some! I may receive a discount coupon if I provide you with a discount coupon.)

  1. Ha ha! I love this! I just had the underwire of two of my bras snap which means that I have to go through the painstaking process of bra hunting. I tried the True and Co. approach but it didn’t work for me. Now I’m going to a local store that seems to get great online reviews. I hope my experience is as awesome as yours and, yes, I will probably cringe at the size I end up with 🙂

    1. I hope you find some good ones! There’s nothing worse than uncomfortable undergarments. Although… the time my bra strap broke during grad school and I had to pin it using one of my journalism professor’s souvenir campaign buttons from the 80s was less than ideal.
