As I mentioned, we went to Kentucky this past weekend for Toby’s homecoming. It was actually the first time I’ve seen his alma mater — we’ve been wanting to go, but hadn’t been able to until this year, when one of his good friends was being inducted into Centre’s athletic hall of fame.
I was really excited to finally be able to see Danville. You may have seen Centre on TV during the vice presidential debates.
Toby took me to see the sights on Friday — the flame statue, the alumni house and the geographical center of Kentucky. We would have gone to his fraternity house, too, but it turns out they have been suspended for a year. Oops. The alumni house was the fraternity’s original house, though, so that’s something.
Saturday, we went to Cam’s ceremony and heard about all sorts of amazingly accomplished Centre alums, then ate in the renovated dining hall and went to the football game. I was kind of surprised at how small the football stadium is (the stands are smaller than most high schools), but it’s fun to be so close to the actual game. Toby also got to see a lot of the guys he played football with, and go into the locker room before the game.
We also walked around the campus a bit more, and saw those outdoor classrooms, which I love. It was pretty cold, though, and it had hailed and rained during the game, so we didn’t stay all day.
Sunday, we explored a little more before driving back to Cincinnati to have lunch with Toby’s mom and grandmother and catch our flight. It was a really great trip, and I loved Centre! I think I would have really enjoyed going there, although apparently a lot of the buildings that are new or renovated didn’t exist when Toby and I were in school, and the downtown is a lot cuter and has more restaurants and stuff now that the county isn’t dry anymore.
But, as you can see, the campus is absolutely gorgeous, and it is also an excellent school with a great community feel. I’m not sure if it’s really “The Harvard of the South,” as Toby calls it, but it is definitely worth checking out.
These are just gorgeous!!! So glad you had a nice visit to the campus
