I grew up hating most breakfast foods. I went through a phase where I would eat bagels (and then wouldn’t), a phase where I would basically only eat those frozen mini-pancakes that taste like marshmallow (but not with pancake syrup — only fruit-flavored syrup) and a very long period during which I refused to eat cereal of any kind. Instead of normal breakfast foods, I would frequently request lunch/dinner foods or dessert (like, pie) in the morning. Yeah, I was a huge pain. And, obviously, I didn’t really like going out to breakfast (or brunch).
But I have grown out of that particular annoying habit, and learned to love brunch. And it’s a good thing, since Toby and his family are really big on breakfast and brunch.
We tried brunch at several places in Annapolis, Alexandria and DC, but one of our favorites is definitely Farmers Fishers Bakers in Georgetown. It’s kind of a unique concept — they have a buffet-style area with a taco bar, a made-to-order egg bar and a salad and dips bar. But they also have waitstaff walking around with freshly baked biscuits and cinnamon rolls, as well as eggs Benedict, sushi, pizza and other fun things. And there’s a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar.
My favorites are the pimento cheese and the chicken taco (there’s a guy at the taco bar making guacamole and different kinds of taco shells — I prefer the puffy kind). My mom loved the kale salad.
Toby had a lot of meat, but also really liked the sushi, the eggs Benedict and the crab-artichoke dip. We all loved the popcorn, but I think our favorite dessert is the banana pudding.
To be honest, there weren’t many things we don’t like there. The pizza is just kind of blah, and the cheese grits aren’t as good as my mother-in-law’s. But everything else is delicious.
Oh, and also, there’s a pretty fountain outside. You just might not want to spend much time out there right now, unless you love humidity.
